Woodstein- The Watergate Era essays
Woodstein- The Watergate Era essays In 1972 the United States was in a social turmoil. Vietnam was at its height and three of the biggest rock-and-roll artists of all time had just died. Riots were all the rage; hippies and radicals were everywhere. The country was in upraise. And thanks to two reporters on the Washington Post, the infamous Watergate scandal was revealed; just a little more fuel to the fire of the late 60s and early 70s. For the second time in our history, impeachment was brought upon a president. For the first and only time in our history, the President resigned. On June 17, 1972 Bob Woodward, a reporter for the Washington Post, got a call to follow a case involving the Watergate offices. Five men had been arrested in the Democratic headquarters carrying no less than two thousand dollars in cash and a few thousand dollars in highly technical equipment for listening to other peoples conversations. He was assigned to the story with a fellow reporter, Carl Bernstein. (Woodward, Bernstein. 4) It looked, on the surface, to be a very basic story. However, more and more questions kept coming up. These were questions about who people were and why they were in the five arrested mens address books. There were two pieces of legal paper addressed to Mr. Howard Hunt, so Woodstein (the culmination of Woodward and Bernsteins names used to describe the duo) called the White House to ask him why the five men would have letters for him. That is where the story begins. Mr. Hunt never denied having been involved, instead he said, In view that the matter is under adjudication, I have no comment. (Woodward, Bernstein. 24) Woodstein worked day and night getting lists of peoples names of people who worked for the Committee to Re-elect the President (CRP; better known as CREEP) and going to their houses. The two reporters imposed on peoples personal lives and made many political people very angry. Yet their ...

Argumentative essay on cigarette advertising Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Argumentative on cigarette advertising - Essay Example Advertising based on Oxford Dictionary is the act of relaying information to potential customers concerning a certain product in the market with the intention of luring them to buy it. This implies the person or Corporation relaying a given productsââ¬â¢ information ought to utilize necessary skills meant to appear brief and communicate effectively to the clients (Capella, Webster & Kinard 269). Hence, manage to get their attention within a very short period in order to create an immense impact. This is similar to cigarettesââ¬â¢ advertising though its mode of advertising due to numerous campaigns against it respective corporations have resulted to exaggerated and fantasized advertising. Numerous images used in advertising pose the notion smoking especially to the young is sweet besides making them fit in a class/status of proving their prowess. This is complete false though through the creativity of numerous corporations have managed to attain large pool of clientele ââ¬Å"who not only smoke for fun but also live to smokeâ⬠. Since, most of them after the first puff turn out to be addicts thus becoming the brandââ¬â¢s habitual users such that the corporation will not be in need of relaying any further information to him or her but to new people. The notion of ââ¬Å"smoking is sweetâ⬠its mode of relaying information to the potential users is by use of youthful models, for instance, women who in turn lure teenage females into the habit. This is because of the ads posing the information as genuine, which is far from the reality but merely a strategy to get future potential clients. In 2004, cigarette corporations emerged with a new strategy citing they h ave devised ââ¬Å"lighter cigarettesâ⬠for those people wishing to ensure the safety of their health (ââ¬Å"Quit Victoriaâ⬠). This is a fallacy because no amount of tar is less dangerous once it finds its way in human bodyââ¬â¢s system. However, the fallacy may seem true based on the corporationsââ¬â¢ information and some confessions emanating from hired smokers. The latter contend ââ¬Å"lighterâ⬠cigarettes are smoother and less irritating compared to the ordinary products, which is not true. This is because companies with the aid of numerous flavors in the industry and market only tend to alter their ââ¬Å"tasteâ⬠. Hence, trying to twist clienteleââ¬â¢s mind towards deeming what they are smoking contain less tar that is why it is smoother to their throats. However, in reality, this is not true but only a market niche meant to draw numerous people towards purchasing the ââ¬Å"lighterâ⬠cigarette. The only trick in this case besides flavors is the use of additives and introduction of tinny holes in the filter meant to filter ash (ââ¬Å"Quit Victoriaâ⬠). This is because the later is the core component that causes irritation in smokersââ¬â¢ throats whereas the obnoxious content passes unfiltered or altered to the lungsââ¬â¢ alveoli. Hence, continue to cause varied chronic predicaments on users, for instance, cancer (ââ¬Å"Quit Victoriaâ⬠). This is because fallacies have already ââ¬Å"hijackedâ⬠their minds to the extent they are unable to unveil whether what diverse marketing ads are relaying is true (Oââ¬â¢Connor). Another relayed fallacy by cigarettesââ¬â¢ corporations encompasses the safety of the product despite admitting to be harmful to human health. This is evident in the way when advertising corporation despite compelled to state cigarettesââ¬â¢ harmful effects choose to indicate with almost invisible statement on their packaging. This is in such a manner numerous users and potential people especially teenagers who wish to experiment smoking

School-Appropriate Social Skills Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
School-Appropriate Social Skills - Essay Example These skills include feeling confident and being approachable, being interested in others, and the degree of feeling alone. Feeling acutely lonely and being extremely shy can cause the child to be "pushed" into a situation or into participating and this is counterproductive. Activities such as "Show and Tell" will help a child in building confidence, being approachable, developing an interest in others, and to thwart the feelings of loneliness. as they learn all the other social skills that come with participating in group activities. Changing the seating arrangement occasionally and playing games such as "Star of the Week" where a child brings in his/her favorite photos and/or snack, etc. and are asked questions by other students. This promotes group time and social interaction. Alone time, quiet time, and individual activities will help children have the appreciation of self, the desire to be alone, and to build self esteem. Quiet time such as reading, doing a puzzle, and drawing are examples of individual things that students can do. These activities led by the teacher will help give children the balance that they need as they are encouraged to develop the skills that kindergarteners should acquire.

The delivery of adult social care is going through a period of Essay
The delivery of adult social care is going through a period of profound challengechallenge and change. Give a critique of the so - Essay Example The 2010 report of the Department of Health has assured additional funding of ?2 billion by 2014/15 but there had been programmes which funds were discontinued and without any clear direction as the Department seem to grapple with opposing demands as well as criticisms and evaluation outcomes. This paper will try to identify and evaluate relevant provisions of current adult social community care, critically analyse the current adult social care policy agenda and its impact on social work provisions, and critique the social care policy agenda and how it will impact on future social work provision with a focus on an adult with learning disability. It will also incorporate in the discussion the theories of normalisation, biological, social model/neo-liberal, social valorisation and person centred approach, medical model and social models. Discussion Government Initiatives The most recent effort of the government about social care is to address empowerment of communities and individuals to address local challenges. Adult social care policy applies the ââ¬Å"putting people firstâ⬠(PPF) approach that helps individuals become more independent, and in control of their own lives through their choices. This is called ââ¬Å"self-directed supportâ⬠where individuals choose their options for home care, hiring personal assistant, or use Adult Social Care (East Sussex County Council, 2010, P 1). High quality services are geared towards making people healthy and in-control of the kind of support they are provided. The Department of Health promotes in the system freedom with the aim to strengthen communities and individuals as autonomy replaces dependency. Another value promoted is fairness addressing the question ââ¬Å"how do we pay for care?â⬠(Department of Health, p 4). The government vies for clear, comprehensive and modern framework that considers both carers and adults who need support. The third value promoted is responsibility where Communities are e ncouraged to become innovative in creating networks of support for individuals. As the Department of Health suggested, ââ¬Å"Care must again be about reinforcing personal and community resilience, reciprocity and responsibility, to prevent and postpone dependency and promote greater independence and choice,â⬠(p 5). The main goals of PPF are: introduce self-directed support prevent problems through early intervention ensure availability of the different types if support for everyone help people use support networks (East Sussex County Council, 2010) . For social care workers, assessment and eligibility criteria may remain the same but changes may be in the care services and solutions that individuals may chose. Social workers involved in the process may include those working in Adult Social Care, voluntary or independent sector, or personal assistants. Carers are provided more involvement in decision-making through assessment of needs as well as planning for support. This will help the team or group involved in the importance of each contribution as well as understand the support the carer or social worker may need. The support plan involves an action plan that includes the list of things to do, by whom and a time table. The team of professionals will then have their roles defined. Additional funding for the future provides a cushion for policy-making and the implementation of improvement as well as redesigning of services to gain

A Day When Everything Went Worng Essay Example for Free
A Day When Everything Went Worng Essay I just cannot think myself lucky when a day of my life goes totally wrong. Recently after starting university a day made me totally upset and frustrated. It was a normal day but my mobile did not give any alarm in the morning so I woke up late. While I was in hurry for university my mother told me that our driver did not come today so I had to go alone. I lived in Dhanmondi and the university was in Bashundhara so I had to take a CNG for university. As soon as I reached Nabisco the CNG had stopped. I asked what happened to the CNG driver. He answered me that the gas was finished and he had to refill it now. As I was late before I just came out from the CNG and hired another one. Finally I reached to the university but it was 10 minutes late. I saw that everyone was writing in the class. When I asked what was going on, they replied me that miss was taking a surprise test. My heart was biting fast but when I heard about the test it started biting faster. After the class I went to the cafe for a cold drink but I found that I had only 50 taka with me. See more: Defining research problem and setting objectives Essay Then I remembered that in harry I forget to take money from mother for CNG rent and I already paid 180 taka to the CNG when I came here. So, I had no money for food at the same time no money for further CNG rent. I had to take bus for home but I never had a bus ride alone before. After asking some of my friends I got an idea about the bus counter here. Then I went there and took a bus. When I heard the bus conductor was screaming ââ¬ËNew Marketââ¬â¢, I found that I was in the wrong bus. This bus was in new market but I should take a bus which had a stoppage in Kolabagan. Since I had nothing to do, I had to get off in new market and took a rickshaw. When finally I was in home it was 6 pm. As long as I met with my mom I saw she was getting ready for going out and she was looking tensed. I asked her what happened. She answered me that one of my aunts was in hospital and maybe she had cancer. I just suddenly became blank. What should I do now? After a while I decided to go with my mom. We were there in the hospital till late night. When I reached home I thought about the whole day and marked it as a totally wrong day of my life.

Euthanasia is Moral Essay -- Argument for Euthanasia
Recent debates over active euthanasia, "killing" a terminally ill patient, in Holland, has raised the question whether euthanasia is immoral or a simple human right. Doctors seem to have no doubt. They made an oath. The definition of Euthanasia depends on whether it is active or passive. Active Euthanasia I only allowed in Holland, and it means that the doctor takes direct measures to put a patient to sleep, whereas passive Euthanasia only involves stopping pill consumption, or stopping treatment. In England, only passive Euthanasia is allowed. Euthanasia touches some of the deepest feelings in human beings. It is the power over life and death, and responsibilities no one wishes to take, have to be taken. This, of cause, leads to the ultimatum, that it is the patient's own choice. But can we allow some one to take their own lives? Doesn't this mean that everyone else around the patient has failed, that more could have been done? From the patient's point of view, a lot of arguments talk in favour of euthanasia. For one, no body wants to be a burden. If a person has had a car accident, which paralyses him from neck and down, and is doomed to sit in a wheelchair for the rest of his life, he knows that he will be 100% dependant on the ones that care for him, his lived ones, forever. It can also be mentioned that the life quality of a terminally ill patient, gets reduced a lot. Never being able to walk again, never being able to talk to your children again, never being able to go shopping, swimming, playing, driving etc. must be terrible for anyone. The whole situation only gets worse, if the patient himself can see that his condition is worsening, and only time keeps his thoughts clear. A third very importa... ... disease by killing the patient, as he believes. It allows the patient to die in peace with no suffering. Steve Forbes calls euthanasia barbaric (31). Isn't it far more barbaric to force someone to suffer rather than helping them to end their misery? Euthanasia is ethical, and physicians should be allowed to assist in it legally. My great-grandfather was terminally ill with cancer. He couldn't eat or sleep, he just laid there, constantly in pain. There was nothing they could do as far as cancer treatment, because his body was too old and weak. So, he suffered for almost 2 months, while we all watched him suffer more and more everyday as he lay there dying. He stated many times how he just wanted to die and didn't want to live anymore. But, we (society) forced him to suffer. This is something that should have never happened and should never happen again.
